Read in…December

The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs Possibly the best book I’ve read all year. Funny and thought provoking. Can’t recommend it highly enough.

Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, Dragondrums (Harper Hall Trilogy) by Anne McCaffrey [audio] A three in one review for the Harper Hall Trilogy that I listened to while sick. This was a re-read.

Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell I read this in November but the review was posted in December as part of the Classic Circuit (just a few more hours to sign up for the February tour of the Harlem Renaissance by the way, join in, I am!)

Hogfather by Terry Pratchett An absolutely hilarious look at our customs through the eyes of the citizens of the Discworld. Read for the 2009 Holiday Challenge and the 2010 Terry Pratchett Challenge.

Epic of Gilgamesh I read this book for the Really Old Classics challenge and because it is mentioned in The History of the Ancient World: From the Earliest Accounts to the Fall of Rome by Susan Wise Bauer which I am also reading. I was disappointed in the translation which felt to scholarly and repetitive but I did like the story. I am willing to try a different translation if someone has a suggestion.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Män som hatar kvinnor) by Stieg Larsson I read it to see what the hype was about and because I could get it from my local library in Swedish. I was disappointed. I didn’t feel like there was anything new to this. I am still trying to decide if I want to read the other two books.

Naked in Death by J.D. Robb A re-read for me. I love this series and am planning to re-read more of them in 2010. This is the first book in the series.

Glory in Death by J.D. Robb Another re-read and number two in the In Death series.
Wow. I read 9 books in December. I’m a little bit impressed with myself here :) I also wrote and defended a major gradschool paper. *pats back*

A J is one of my favorite writers. His biblical book was my personal favorite for 08. I too highly recommend it. Hogfather is also a favorite as it features the character Death. I am looking forward to getting my hands on Pratchett's latest book, hopefully Death will pop in at some point...not that the other Pratchett characters want to see him!

I read Stephen Mitchell's translation of Gilgamesh, and it blew me away! It would only take a couple of hours to read too. I think Year of LIving Biblically was marvelous as well-I keep meaning to read Jacobs' other books now! :)

Yay for you and your paper. :D
