Great list, this will be very useful.

Can I suggest that you put Laxness under "classics" and Knut Hamsun under "Fiction"? I think they'll feel more at home there. :-)

What a great resource! But where's Sigrid Undset? Did I overlook her? Also, I'm reading Sagas of the Icelanders right now: a medieval classic that I'm quite enjoying. :) I'd also add Purge (by Sofi Oksanen, who's half Finnish/half Estonian) to fiction and Yrsa Sigurdardóttir to crime fiction. Her first, translated into English at least, is Last Rituals.

Done now, I promise! ;)

Thank you both! And Eva I added them. I can't believe I forgot Undset *shameface* And if you have more keep them coming!

I found your challenge through Book Blogger Abroad - My goal is to read around the world as much as I can next year so I will sign up.

Can I ask where you live in Sweden? My family is from Vastervik. I love Sweden - it might explain why cold snowy weather is always calling for me :)

Welcome Mari!

I'm about two hours in land from Stockholm. If you like snowy cold you would love it right now :D We have about 30cm of snow and -25C. It is pretty :)

Hälsning från Helsingfors!:)

Here's a few more Finnish books, you might want to add to your list:
Johanna Sinisalo: Birdbrain
Elina Hirvonen: When I Forgot
Monika Fagerholm: Wonderful Women by the Water
and also by Fagerholm The American Girl
Väinö Linna: Under the North Star (3. parts, a classic) and The Unknown Soldier (also a classic)
Aleksis Kivi: Seven Brothers (a classic)
And anything by Mika Waltari (The Egyptian, The Roman, The Etruscan, The Dark Angel etc.)(these might also be considered classics, esp. The Egyptian)
Then there is of course our national epos Kalevala that is also translated into English.
There's more about these classics on my blog:

Greetings,
Tiina

Hei!

Can I also suggest Karin Fossum in your Mystery list? While Jo Nesbo is fantastic, I think Ms. Fossum really deserves some mention. She brings an added dimension to Norwegian crime, I feel.

Also, a couple more I'd like to add to anyone that is interested... Hakan Nesser, Helene Tursten, and one cannot forget the pair that started it all with Scandinavian crime fiction.... Sjöwall and Wahlöö!!

Tusen Takk!
Angela

Two so far: What is Mine by Anne Holt, and Shadow Woman by Ake Edwardson, but I'm also reading World Light by Halldor Laxness (Will I ever finish it? It is so baggy! ) and bailed on a few others including Nella Larsen's narcissistic Quicksand.
